An important difference between premodernism, modernism, and postmodernism resides in where power or authority lies. For premodernists, authority rested in religious leaders and the church because they were the holders of revealed truth. For modernists, political and scientific leaders assumed power because they had a privileged position in relation to what was deemed truth – science and reason.
Though there is a movement toward postmodernism, premodern and modern power structures can still be easily identified. However, these power sources are not as absolute today as they used to be.
