Intercultural Conflict

This is a CLC assignment.

In your group, choose which movie you will watch among the following: Gangs of New York (1938), 12 Angry Men (1957), Gentleman’s Agreement(1947), and The Philadelphia Story (1940). You can watch the newer versions of these movies, but it is preferable that the older versions are watched, if possible. Groups should find and agree on a movie that is new to the whole group. Find copies at a public library or video rental store and watch the movie to find examples of answers to the following questions: What factors cause intercultural conflict, and how can those conflicts be addressed meaningfully? Watch the characters in the story to determine what contributes to the way they communicate, what creates the conflict, and what they did or could do to address the issue constructively.

After you have watched the movie, work with your group to find good examples with which to answer the questions. Note that the cultural differences in these movies may or may not depend on race or ethnicity.

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation to show what you learned. It should include at least 10 slides, including a title page with group members’ names on it. Each main point should be presented on its own slide with supporting evidence. Include a conclusion slide and a reference slide. Make it fun, but informative, showing depth of thought and critical thinking.
