Question #1:
Do you see a major shift from analog to digital in the humanitarian model? If so, what are the driving forces behind this shift?
Topic 3: The Power of Digital Media
This week you also watched Kony 2012 by Invisible Children.
Discussion:
Invisible Children has created a very moving visual appeal to take up arms in the fight to capture Joseph Kony. This video has received over 101 MILLION YouTube views. As a result of this project, Invisible Children received millions of dollars in donations to aid their cause. The non-profit organization came under fire as critics argued that Joseph Kony had long since left Uganda, had not been a threat for many years, had not been seen since 2006, and some presumed him to be dead. The organization has also come under fire for misleading donors and mishandling funds. Many Ugandan citizens questioned the efforts of Invisible Children. This is an example of the power of digital media to mobilize, motivate, and even manipulate.
Question #1:
Would you contribute to the effort to capture Joseph Kony? Locate an article or video that sheds more light on Kony 2012 and share it with the class. How does your contribution to this topic add to the discussion?
