In Chapter 11, we learn about stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Although many forms of negative bias are either socially frowned upon or legally outlawed, there may be one area in which it is still acceptable to hold negative beliefs about people (and perhaps even act on these beliefs): weight. Please watch the following video from Waldorf’s Films on Demand library, and summarize your answers to the following questions in the form of a Reflection Paper:

Obesity: Pain and prejudice (1998). In Heart of the Matter. Retrieved from Films on Demand database.

1. What attributions do people tend to make regarding those who are overweight?

2. What evidence does this film present for the possibility of weight prejudice?

3. Based on your knowledge from this class, why might people be more willing to still express negative beliefs towards the overweight?

4. Based on your personal opinion, should the overweight be legally protected from discrimination?
