In most societies today, except for the very privileged, almost everyone must work in order to simply survive. Working is literally the process by which we exchange our time (the only thing that we actually own) and thus it is central to who we are as human beings. And yet, through various historical forces, people under different local and national contexts will have different ‘social and economic worth’ attached to their time. Using ideas presented in the lecture, explain why work – the exchange of our time for money – is the key mechanism for divisions across almost every society in the world.
